Unlocking Carbon Fiber

Thread has developed a proprietary process that leverages the naturally occurring molecular structure of asphaltene within bitumen, to produce carbon fiber that addresses the three fundamental challenges of expanded carbon fiber adoption: cost; emissions intensity; and, supply reliability. In addition, the process permanently sequesters the carbon atoms from release into the atmosphere.

Using bitumen-based feedstock in a proprietary purification and melt production process, Thread is targeting a >50% reduction to the incumbent polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fiber production cost.
Up to 90% Less production emissions than polyacrylonitrile (PAN)

An independent, third-party analysis concluded that Thread’s production process generates GHG emissions that are from 50% to 90% lower than current PAN process (variable based on input energy grid).

The combination of the Thread process and the abundance of Alberta bitumen provides reliability so manufacturers can confidently engineer carbon fiber into large-scale and long-term applications.

Our History

Thread was founded with a vision to revolutionize the carbon fiber industry. Under the leadership of Dr. Weixing Chen, Thread’s research and development journey began in 2016.  This lead to major breakthroughs in the production of carbon fiber precursors, the core of Thread’s intellectual property, that can be consistently and continuously melt-produced into fibers.

Thread Today

Thread has constructed a 10,000 square foot pre-commercial research &development facility in Edmonton, Alberta. The objective of this key project is to: (i) demonstrate commercial scalability of the Thread proprietary process; and (ii) develop carbon fiber outputs to meet next-generation demand requirements.
